Class Structures and Year Split

After one year in the Foundation stage children move onto Key Stage 1 (KS1). The term “Key Stage 1” is used to describe the two years of schooling after the Foundation Stage. Children in Key Stage 1 are split into year groups known as Year 1 and Year 2. Year 1 children are usually 5 or 6 years of age and children in Year 2 are usually 6 or 7 years of age.

Class 3 contains Year 1 pupils.
Class 4 contains a mixture of Year 1 & Year 2 pupils.
Class 5 contains Year 2 pupils.

Each class has a maximum of 30 children.

Assessment and Reporting

All children in Year 1 receive a National phonics screening check. This short assessment confirms whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate level and identifies children who may need extra support to improve their reading skills.

In Year 2 National assessment tasks and tests (SATs) are carried out informally as part of normal classroom activity. The results inform teachers’ overall assessments in English, Mathematics and Science, which are reported to parents and the Department for Education.

All children are continually assessed and parents are informed of their child’s progress at Parents Evenings and in a written report at the end of each school year.
