At Rainford CE Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that children with medical conditions are fully supported so that they can access all aspects of school life safely and confidently. We work closely with parents, healthcare professionals and pupils to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place.

Supporting Children with Medical Conditions

We follow the Department for Education's statutory guidance Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions at School and ensure that pupils with medical needs receive the support they require.

This may include:

• Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs)
• Administration of prescribed medication
• Support with short-term medical needs
• Management of long-term health conditions
• Emergency medical procedures when require
• Staff training and awareness

Medication in School

Where possible, medicines should be administered at home.

However, we recognise that some children require medication during the school day.

Parents should:

• Complete a school medication consent form.
• Provide medication in its original packaging.
• Ensure medication is clearly labelled with the child's name.
• Inform school immediately of any changes to dosage or treatment.

School staff will:

• Store medication securely.
• Keep records of medication administered.
• Follow agreed healthcare plans.
• Contact parents if concerns arise.

Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs)

Some children with ongoing medical conditions will have an Individual Healthcare Plan which outlines:

• Medical needs and symptoms
• Medication requirements
• Emergency procedures
• Roles and responsibilities
• Educational and pastoral support

These plans are developed in partnership with parents and healthcare professionals and reviewed regularly.

Allergy Safety and Benedict's Law

From September 2026, schools in England are required to meet strengthened allergy safety standards through the implementation of Benedict's Law. 

As part of these requirements, Rainford CE has: 

• a published Allergy Safety Policy
• allergy awareness and anaphylaxis training for ALL staff 
• emergency adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs) in school 
• Individual Healthcare Plans for pupils with serious allergies
• Strong communication, record keeping and incident reporting processes
