Welcome to Science at Rainford CE Primary School...

At Rainford C.E. Primary School, we want our children to be endlessly curious about the world around them. To foster this spark of inquiry, our science curriculum is powered by Developing Experts—a dynamic and beautifully sequenced programme designed to turn our pupils into the scientists, engineers, and innovators of tomorrow.

Science is much more than a collection of facts; it is a way of thinking, questioning, and discovering. Through Developing Experts, we provide our children with a rigorous, vocabulary-rich education that connects classroom learning directly to real-world industries and future career possibilities.

Why We Use Developing Experts: The Rationale

The Developing Experts curriculum is built on a powerful "spiral" approach to learning. This means that core scientific concepts are revisited year after year, with each new encounter deepening the children's understanding and building on what they have already mastered.

    • Knowledge that Sticks: Science themes are meticulously sequenced. For instance, when children explore Everyday Materials in Year 1, they are building the foundation to study the Uses of Materials in Year 2, States of Matter in Year 4, and ultimately Properties and Changes of Materials in Year 5.

    • A Continuous Narrative: By explicitly linking prior learning to future learning, children understand that science is a connected story. A Year 3 unit on Nutrition and Exercise isn't taught in isolation; it directly prepares them for the Year 4 unit on the Digestive System, which later feeds into the Year 6 study of the Circulatory System and Health.

    • Inspiring Future Careers: Every single lesson connects back to real-world applications, showing children exactly how the science they learn at their desks is used by experts working in STEM fields globally today.

    Supporting Your Child at Home

Developing Experts places a strong emphasis on scientific vocabulary. You can support your child's journey at home by asking them about the specific "expert words" they learned in science each week. Exploring nature walks, cooking together (to talk about states of matter!), or looking at the night sky are all wonderful ways to bridge school learning with home life.
