Governors

As well as the Headteacher and a staff representative, our local Academy Board (LAB) also includes parents/carers of children who attend our school and representatives from our village church, All Saints. In addition, the local governing body can recommend people with skills to be governors. These governors are known as co-opted governors.

The LAB has a range of duties and powers which include but are not limited to:

• agreeing targets for pupil achievement and attendance
• managing the school's finances and resources
• making sure the curriculum is balanced and broadly based
• appointing staff
• reviewing staff performance and pay.

The main role of our governors is to champion our children, support the school leaders and also hold the leadership team to account for pupil outcomes. They also ensure that statutory requirements around safeguarding and curriculum are put into place.

Our governors also have link roles which means they have a particular responsibility for an area of school and meet regularly with the subject leader as well as attending the local academy board meeting each half term. Because of the commitment and time spent, all our governors know the strengths of our school. They are also aware of ways in which we can improve.

The governors of Rainford CE Primary School believe it is important that boards reflect the diversity of the school communities they serve. Diverse boards promote inclusive school environments and provide diverse role models for staff and young people. The governors are currently collecting data on the diversity of the board, including data on age, gender and ethnicity. They will use that data to inform their recruitment and training needs and ensure there is always a diverse range of perspectives around the table to support robust decision making.

The Register of Interest and eligibility to serve of each governor is reviewed at the first Local Academy Board meeting at the start of each academic year. Governors must also declare any personal or pecuniary interests at the beginning of any governor meeting.
